Week 1 source card

Cheyney University: A School Created for Opportunity

On February 25, 1837, a school was established through a gift from Richard Humphreys. It was first called the African Institute. Soon, it was renamed the Institute for Colored Youth. The school was created to educate people of African descent and prepare teachers. Today, the institution is Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.

Historical name note: “Colored” appears here because it was part of the institution’s historical name. It is not the language generally used for Black people today.

This HBCU PREP AI source card is an original paraphrase based on the institution’s official history. You do not need to leave this lesson.

Choose one fact the card directly tells you. Then show which words helped you find it.

  1. 1Write one true fact from the card.
  2. 2Use the words “The card says…” or “I know because…” to show where you found it.
